Over 100 Kent schools have so far registered for a scheme which encourages and helps schools to recycle used newspapers and magazines. Organised by Aylesford Newsprint, the Kent-based newsprint manufacturer, schools are provided with a wheeled storage container and regular scheduled collections. They are guaranteed an income of Pounds 30 per ton for a three-year term, plus bonus points for paper collected which can be exchanged for promotional items, including pens, mugs and T-shirts. According to figures issued last month by the Spoken Word Publishers Association, spoken-word audio cassettes are one of the retail success stories of the decade, with a range of novels, plays, television and radio series all being published on audio cassette. Sales for 1994 totalled Pounds 34 million, a 50 per cent increase on the previous year. A major factor is the proliferation of new outlets including garages and supermarkets.

Budgenor Lodge, a 200-year-old former workhouse for the poor in Easebourne has recently been renovated and now houses a Bible training centre offering services to schools.
