Just as actor Stephen Fry’s best teacher, Rory Stuart, “who taught English literature with such a contagious passion”, made him feel that teaching is his thwarted vocation, many teachers believe themselves to be thwarted actors (TES Magazine, January 4).
The creativity and energy required for both professions is comparable, although teachers don’t have to worry about getting bums on seats.
With yet another year of hectic change ahead (in particular, the biggest curriculum reforms in 20 years which loom for schools in 2008), how many Rory Stuarts will survive the year?
