Any ideas for assessment techniques for Curriculum for Excellence?

Proof of CfE will be in assessment. One big difference, according to Building the Curriculum 5, is National Assessment Resource is going to be available to teachers. Eventually, we will be able to contribute to it. Imagine - teachers being allowed and trusted to contribute to a professional resource they will all use and share. Have a look at LTScotland’s assessment exemplars to see how different assessment may look under CfE. BTC5 points out tests that look and function like NAs may stay as one component of testing, if useful.

Secondary exemplars are woeful.

The primary exemplars are typical class projects. But if anyone is looking for rigour, it’s not there. The National Assessment Bank is to be switched off on July 2, but the principle remains - assessment must match the curriculum, in purposes and methods.

I don’t agree. The existing National Tests assess basic literacy and numeracy skills. If I want to show that my pupils have mastered most of the basics of first-level maths, I’ll give them a Level B test, which will do that.

Read Assessment for CfE FAQs on the LTS website. In particular, National Assessment Resource, pp15-17, which describes the new way of approaching testing, and 5-14 National Assessment Bank, pp17-18. This makes clear that some NA materials may be adapted for CfE, but only after a review to ensure they are “fit for purpose”.

NAR was never intended to be a series of tests you could download or use like the 5-14 assessments. It’s sharing best practice about how people are assessing the outcomes.

Assessment is central, it’s not something you stick on at the end. You can’t understand a curriculum until you get your head around the assessment of it.

I totally disagree. You can teach a curriculum, then assess it in many ways. Did Socrates refuse to talk to his students until he had an assessment framework in place?
