Do men climb ranks faster?

potatoes5: Does the male primary teacher enjoy promotion quicker than the female? More recently it seems the face of the primary headteacher is getting younger and is quite often a male. Are men better heads in primary? Is it a case of ability and performance, or if there’s a man in the shortleet, has he got the job before the interview has started?

xmal: Given the anti-male bias in primary selection, I’m surprised there are any men to be promoted.

minivan: In 2005, women were 93 per cent of primary teachers and men 7 per cent; men were 19 per cent of primary heads. Women were 59 per cent of secondary teachers and men were 41 per cent, but 72 per cent of heads were men. So it would seem there’s a gender bias in favour of men in both sectors, but more in secondary.

halfajack: To judge if there was a bias, you’d also have to know the difference in the number of men and women applying AND being interviewed.

sparky3: Not really, because there’s everything that happens before the application. Are men more encouraged to apply for senior positions?
