It is always useful for students starting child care courses to read books that give an overview of the subject. Here are four respected general child care books, but it is worth remembering that students should be encouraged to use them as a stepping stone to more specific reading.

Good Practice in Child Care is full of useful advice for anyone entering the profession. It is clearly presented throughout offering opportunities for self assessment. The sections on “confidentiality” and “working with parents” provide sound information for those starting a career in child care.

Child Care and Development is an old and familiar friend. This is the fourth edition and is updated to include the changes in early years care and education, and child care courses. There are useful activities for those studying key skills in communication, application of number and IT at Level 2. The book is user-friendly and accessible for Level 2 and 3 candidates.

Any tutor in today’s climate must ensure that their students consider a European perspective. Early Years Care and Education in Europe is a valuable book and will encourage students to understand other European provision. It highlights shared issues and concerns. This Level 3 book is recommended for tutors, students and existing practitioners.

Caring for Children will be valuable for students studying the CACHE Foundation Award or similar introductory courses. It introduces the reader to basic caring skills.

Tutors and students will find the End of Unit Tasks a useful revision tool. There is helpful guidance on opportunities in the early years sector and the responsibility that they entail.
