Speaking at the launch of the programme of events, Deyan Sudjic, director of Glasgow 1999, promised to make the year as accessible as possible by involving children in curriculum initiatives. ``We want to leave a lasting legacy to the city,’’ he said.

In the build up, the city has already introduced ’‘designer in residence’’ projects in primaries and secondaries, involving pupils in making hanging banners, jewellery, models and maps. Work on fabrics was another key activity.

Anne Wallace, a teacher at Quarrybrae primary, has been seconded to coordinate action between the ‘99 design office and the education department. Scores of local projects would ensure the year featured strongly.

Pupils, she said, would also contribute to large-scale public events, including an inter-active exhibition, The Design Machine, at the Kelvingrove art gallery. A further highlight will be Glasgow At Our Feet, which will involve children in creating a large floor mosaic representation of the city. It will be used as a space for performing arts.

Two journals of linked curriculum support materials are being produced while a millennium database will provide a complete record of all projects.
