Discuss and research the following issues: What is national identity? Where does it come from? What makes a person “English”, or “British”? Do cultural events at places such as Wembley, Wimbledon or Ascot define how we see ourselves or how we like to be seen? Contrast views with France, the French, and the Tour. Perhaps research images and views from French media.

What perceptions about France or the French might we take from the Tour de France? How might it make French people feel? Give reasons for your opinions.

In teams, create a cultural event that might represent a country of choice.

Which “national qualities” will be celebrated in it? How will it avoid damaging the environment? Will all countries be invited to it - even those with brutal regimes in power? How can these ideas be presented, perhaps using video or ICT?
