KS 1-2: Most schools have an odd corner that could be developed to make it more friendly to songbirds - even if the tarmac is wall-to-wall there might be room for a nest box and bird-feeder. If you have the space, however, you could establish a wildlife garden as part of your KS1 and 2 citizenship teaching. Section 6, Developing our school grounds, would justify it, and there’s also a link to science 2b, Plants and animals in the local environment. Ask pupils to research the kind of habitat, food supply, shelter and nesting sites songbirds need, before they plan the garden, and design it around the birds’ needs. Refer to the helpful RSPB “A to Z of a wildlife garden” at www.rspb.org.ukgardensguide
