FEARS that refugee children will be the victims of bullying or racism at school are being tackled through a newsletter launched by the Scottish Executive this week aimed at teachers, parent-teacher associations and school boards.

Welcoming Newcomers has been produced by the Anti Bullying Network and the Centre for Education for Racial Equality in Scotland, both based at Edinburgh University’s education faculty.

Nicol Stephen, Deputy Education Minister, said at the launch at Barmulloch primary, which teaches several children of asylum-seekers in Glasgow: “Our classrooms and playgrounds are the best place to show how caring and tolerant our local communities can be.”

Barmulloch has a special unit teaching basic English and supporting integration into normal classes. Every refugee is given a buddy of their own age and gender.

Sighthill nursery and Shawlands Academy in Glasgow and St Machar Academy in Aberdeen also feature in the newsletter.
