The perks range from help with finding housing, mortgage assistance, salaries that are paid from June, July or August for a September real start, discounts on council facilities, or credits towards an masters degree on successful completion of your induction. The array of extras can be bewildering, so we decided to ask each authority what exactly they had on offer.

Some authorities enjoy low-rent property prices, beautiful scenery and a good night life - they face no shortage of applicants, so they feel no great need to offer extra benefits. Others are still working out what they will be able to offer to next year’s intake, so watch this space because we will be updating this information in future issues.

Some have passed on the responsibility for incentives to headteachers and governing bodies, so if you’re interested in an area, it may still be worth approaching individual schools to see what they can offer, especially if you happen to teach a shortage subject.
