OVER 4,000 teachers in further education and sixth-form colleges will be able to apply for a subsidy of 50 per cent of the cost of a computer, up to a maximum of pound;500.

The new pound;3 million Computers for FE Teachers initiative (CFET) is aimed at increasing personal computer ownership, in order to raise standards in the FE sector.

The pilot scheme will run from the beginning of the academic year until December 21 and is open to all FE teachers in colleges where the Learning and Skills Council is the primary source of funding.

John Harwood, chief executive of the LSC, said: “Personal access to a computer has been shown to raise competence and confidence in teachers’ use of information communication technology.”
