Meanwhile, at Winton primary in the London borough of Islington, parents will be getting their own lessons this year, writes Adam Coulter. The scheme is being launched because of the high proportion of parents who are out of work or have English as a second language.
Jane Fulford, the head, said: “We hope to offer English, numeracy and literacy classes. When families move here they feel stranded and there was a feeling that there was a great need for this. The more we can help parents, the more we can help their children.”
The first stage will be to train volunteers to run the parents’ house, a disused building beside the school.
The scheme is part of a larger community project and funding includes Pounds 200,000 from the European Union and Pounds 462,000 from the single regeneration budget.
