We’ve already got Michael Gove suggesting that teachers should be prepared to work longer hours and now we have Valerie Thompson (“The digital age is now, so embrace it”, 20 January) implying that a teacher who does not use technology should be sacked.

I believe that technology, if used appropriately, can enhance learning, but why do its proponents have to be quite so evangelical in its application? I am sure that we can all remember a teacher who truly inspired us to learn and I bet they did not have to rely on all things digital to capture interest.

Yes, teachers need to be able to use technology effectively but, at the same time, new entrants into the profession need to be able to teach without having to rely on it. Teachers should be able to enthuse and motivate their pupils with their passion for teaching and for their subject. The likes of Ms Thompson need to understand that teachers are not machines; we all have our own teaching styles. What is so wrong with a teacher who, for sound pedagogical reasons, chooses not to use technology?
