The Education Department’s Glaswegian Minister of State, Eric Forth, has remained surprisingly calm in the midst of the caning furore, despite his hang-‘em-and-flog-‘em reputation. And despite the most severe provocation. Forth tells his friends that as a child he was beaten on an almost daily basis for insubordination. It evidently did the man no harm, as he is now firmly against the brutal practice.
