I returned to work this year to find a flashy refurbished cafeteria with the old doors changed for modern types with glass portholes. I work in a department that has out-of-date and unreliable computers. Surely the money should have been spent upgrading facilities not doors?

Point taken but remember, since incorporation, colleges have to be attractive to “customers”. Many date from the Sixties and are blighted by age and neglect, so a lot of money has been spent on appearance. Of course, once the bum is on the seat the next step is to keep it there. If the facilities are poor the customer may look elsewhere. Is the food any better?
