One in five drivers aged 17-18 admits to having been under the influence of alcohol while at the wheel.

A further one in 14 has been on illegal drugs while driving, according to a survey by Brake, a charity which works with colleges to encourage road safety.

The UK-wide survey, supported by Co-operative Insurance, revealed that young drivers are not gambling only with their own lives, but also those of their friends. A third of the 3,118 teenagers surveyed said they had been a passenger with a drunk or drugged driver.
