Elite schools shouldn’t forget their morals

Writing about independent schools (From the Editor, 7 October), Gerard Kelly asks, “how do you persuade parents and governors to invest in an undertaking that may benefit the underprivileged?”.

He seems to have forgotten that most independent schools are charities. Their governors, who are the trustees of those charities, shouldn’t need persuading that they should undertake activities that will benefit the underprivileged. That is why their schools were founded in the first place.

Independent schools have a legal and moral obligation to benefit the underprivileged. Your editor should not allow them to forget that.
