Extra staff cut Welsh class-sizes

AN EXTRA 523 teachers will be employed in primary schools in Wales next September, as part of the drive to cut class sizes to 30 pupils or less.

The National Assembly is providing a further pound;15.6 million for Wales’ 22 education authorities.Almost 600 schools will benefit from the invesment, which will also fund 71 new classrooms across the principality.

ccording to the latest figures (September 1999), 9,236 five- to seven-year-olds are being educated in classes of over 30 this academic year. That figure is 70 per cent less than last year. Welsh Education Secretary, Rosemary Butler said: “We are well on our way to meeting our pledge that no child under 7 will be in a class of over 30 by September 2001.”
