But the short movie - telling the story of a vulnerable 14-year-old groomed by a paedophile in an internet chatroom - has beaten off competition from Hollywood to scoop a top award in a Welsh film festival.

The idea for Gd 2 tlk - short for good to talk - came from students at Porth County community school, Rhondda Cynon Taf, after they were shocked by their own research into sexual crimes.

They wrote the script and pitched their short film idea to festival organiser Zoom Cymru, which decided to commission it with funding from film company Plastic Buddah Productions.

Hywel George, producer at PBP, was so impressed he wants to send the film to every school in Wales as a warning to young people. The harrowing tale follows Rachel, who is grief-stricken following the death of her best friend. She arranges to meet a man at the funeral after talking to him online.

The short movie was filmed at Trealaw cemetery near to the school. The sixth-formers were made aware of the dangers of using chatrooms after a visit by representatives from the Westminster government’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre, a group set up last year to raise awareness. The pupils’ own research found a staggering 87 per cent of pupils at the school used internet chatrooms.

The pupils shot and edited the movie over half a term.

Filmgoers at the Zoom Cymru festival voted Gd 2 tlk the best out of 40 shown in the Zoom Cymru festival, including Hollywood blockbusters like Toy Story.
