Inspired by the stories of her Jamaican mother Olivia, author Marcia Hutchinson produced a photographic exhibition based on the experiences of men and women who left the Caribbean to live in the UK after the Second World War. The exhibition, part of the Windrush ‘98 celebrations, became a book - The Journey - featuring 10 personal stories of people from Barbados, Carriacou, Trinidad and Jamaica who eventually settled in West Yorkshire.

Following the success of the book, The Journey Learning Resource has been created to provide cross-curricular materials that promote cultural diversity. Like the book, the pack gives voice to an under-represented section of society, but it goes further by including a CD, A4 posters, teacher’s handbook and a copy of The Journey.

Former teacher Chrissy Callaghan has written the substantial and thorough handbook, which suggests group and independent work for citizenship and PSHE, literacy, drama, geography and history. It also features a website listing, a recommended reading list, transcripts of the abridged interviews and readings on the CD.

In Olivia’s Journey, the junior version of The Journey, Olivia and Lila Hutchinson interview their grandmother, with accompanying illustrations from primary school pupils from West Yorkshire and Croydon.

Marcia Hutchinson says the resource is aimed at all sorts of schools and “in the pilot project it went down just as well in all-white schools in leafy suburbs as it did at more mixed schools”.

Inservice training is available to get the most from the pack. For more information visit the Yorkshire-based charity Abacus and Primary Colours www.thejourneyresource.co.uk
