The days when schools could use one-year, fixed-term contracts to try out new staff are over. On June 1, the qualifying period for bringing unfair dismissal claims was cut from two years to one. This means that employers who appointed staff for a year last September will have to renew their contracts at the end of August - unless they have good reason not to, such as redundancy.
