Callander Primary has had great success with two young autistic boys, who would communicate with just one word, for food or TV or a toy. Using the picture exchange communication system (Pecs), they have learnt categories of symbols and take part in a sequenced programme called “Fun Time”. With a Boardmaker Picture Symbol for each activity - jump, run, kick, and so on - hung on a vertical strip on the gym wall, they can initiate interaction themselves. “You choose” - the child takes the first card; “Do this” - child and adult complete the activity; “finished” - adult gives card to child to place in the “finished” pocket. Activities have been extended with Forth Valley Health Board’s Get, Set, Go programme. Apart from great fun, the boys have improved physical and communication skills.
