BARNSLEY college is expecting to make 100 staff redundant as it attempts to reduce its annual budget by pound;3m pounds.
The troubled college is still the subject of a Serious Fraud Office investigation about alleged financial irregularities. It has repaid pound;5m of pay-back money owed when it failed to meet Further Education Funding Council targets. However, it still has to reduce its revenue expenditure.
The college, which currently turns over more that pound;20 million a year, may also reduce the number of sites from eight to one.
“I regret having to make such an announcement at this time of year,” said principal Joe West, who has been spending much of the last two weeks explaining the situation in meetings with staff.
“Sadly, we have to make significant savings and quickly. I will do all I can to ensure that we manage this process fairly and as openly as we possible. I hope that most, if not all, the job losses will be achieved through voluntary redundancy.”
Plans are also in hand to introduce a new management structure at the South Yorkshire college.
More than 100 jobs have already been made redundant in a recent round of cuts. There are plans to reduce the number of agency teachers at the college, which employs 650 staff and has 18,000 full and part-time students.
