Gateshead - Council mulls primary closures

Gateshead council is to hear recommendations this week on which of its primary schools should face closure in response to falling birth rates in the region.

The town intends to close and amalgamate a number of primary schools in August next year, due to the fall in pupil numbers.

Many schools are operating with surplus places, meaning smaller schools find it difficult to maintain standards but receive a disproportionate share of funding.

It is hoped that funds saved through the closure of a small number of less populated schools will be reinvested in other schools.

David Mitchell, director of learning and schools at the council, said: “We would like to thank all those who contributed to the review by putting forward their views and suggestions.

“These are difficult decisions for the council, but it is important we consider these changes to ensure the long-term success of all our young people.” RV.
