CHANGING GEOGRAPHY SERIES: Sportscapes. Edited by John Bale. Disability, Space and Society. Edited by Rob Kitchin. Geographical Association pound;5 (members). pound;7.50 (non-members).

This new series aims to make recent research and thinking in human geography accessible to A-level students. Sportscapes includes the language and simplified methods of new cultural geography as well as a familiar decision-making exercise on the location of a football ground.

Disability, Space and Society provides a thoughtful introduction to geographies of disability, enlivened by a series of activities focusing on the interpretation of images and viewpoints. Students’ (and teachers’) attitudes may be challenged.

The texts are authoritative and thorough, though less academic students may need support. The attractive photographs are often used in activities. Recognising the potential for interdisciplinary links, the editor suggests other academic and vocational courses that might use the books (and share the cost?), and the topics have sufficient general appeal for A-level taster days or general studies courses.

One drawback for practical use is that the folded, stapled format makes individual titles hard to recognise on the library or department shelf.

Overall, these books are innovative, interesting and good value. It would be well worth getting a set if the topics correspond to your A-level modules, but single books would also be helpful for keeping subject knowledge up to date.
