Michael Weller’s account of his miserable experiences at grammar school in the 1950s and 1960s (Letters, June 12) made grim reading, but it is a shame he feels all grammar schools should be tarred with the same brush.

My grammar school days (1958-1965) were close to his, but the now defunct Thames Valley Grammar School was a thoroughly enjoyable place. It had its strict discipline, of course, and more’s the pity for the passing of that, but it gave the boys and girls a full and rounded education.

We would certainly have discussed such issues as the European Union and British National Party, as it seems City Academy in Bristol has (Nationwide, June 12). I fancy we would have been given a balanced view rather than the subliminal EU propaganda evident in too many schools today.
