The Great Exams Debate

“I am writing, not as a teacher but as a student who has just completed my A levels. I’m pretty confident I’ll get what I need to go to university so I can then go on to complete a PGCE and become a teacher myself (of maths and physics).

I’ve had some pretty awesome teachers. However, I resent not having been challenged at school. I coasted through without putting in much effort and still achieved a respectable range of As and Bs, plus two A*s for double- award science. So imagine what I could have achieved if I’d been challenged (by O levels). Is calculus really that difficult? Or basic mechanics or physics? Abandoning a split GCSE for the clearer classification of O level and CSE would at least be an open and explicit admission that there are different standards of capability and potential.”
