Talking as we were earlier of Harry Potter, we are glad to see that the Harray potter has come riding to the rescue of potential “gymslip mums” in Orkney. Andrew Appleby, whose renowned pottery is in the island parish of Harray, helped out a local sex education drive last year by doing what he does best - sculpting, in this case penises.

A couple of hundred were used in sex education lessons to demonstrate, among other things, how to put on condoms. His products “had a nice feel to them”, Appleby tells us. “At least they were better than a banana.”

They certainly did not flop. The sculpted phalluses may well account for the remarkable improvement in Orkney’s pregnancy rate - down from 43 per 1,000 women aged 13-19 in 1995 to 14 last year (the Scottish figure was an unchanged 42).

Appleby is still open to offers for his erections: he hasn’t thrown away the moulds.
