State schools have expressed an interest in taking up an alternative to A levels which will become available from September 2008, the exam board behind the course said this week. Comprehensives, grammar schools and sixth form colleges are among those considering the Cambridge Pre-U, which dispenses with modular exams and leaves all assessment to the end of the course.

The qualification has been developed by teachers from leading private schools including Eton, Winchester and Westminster. But University of Cambridge International Examinations, which will offer it, could not say how many state schools will run the course.
