Heavy metal music can help gifted and talented pupils to dispel negative emotions and recover self-esteem, according to Warwick university research.

A survey of 1,057 members of the national academy for gifted and talented youth found that more than a third chose heavy metal as one of their favourite types of music.

Stuart Cadwallader, who led the research, said it undermined the stereotype that gifted pupils preferred classical music.
