Sara Bubb offers advice to students and NQTs

I am doing my PGCE in Wales. When I finish I will be looking for a job in Wales, but may want to work in England in the future. At present there is no induction year or literacy and numeracy tests in Wales. What should I do to ensure that I can work in England?

Your qualification will be recognised in England, and the fact that you haven’t done the dreaded literacy and numeracy tests is unlikely to matter to schools who might employ you.

If you teach in Wales for at least two terms before the introduction of induction arrangements, you’ll be exempt from having to serve induction in England. There would, however, be advantages to serving your first year - and thus induction - in England. It offers considerale protection to NQTs. Schools are given pound;1,000 per term to fund a 10 per cent reduction in your timetable. You are also protected from “unreasonable” demands, such as curriculum co-ordination and demanding behaviour problems. You’ll have an individualised programme of support, monitoring and assessment from an induction tutor. There will also be assessment meetings and reports at the end of each term.

However, if you fail induction in England, you are not allowed to teach in maintained schools or non-maintained special schools.
