Pupils might investigate a question such as “Were the Aztecs just like us?” They could start by looking at the Aztecs’ love of chocolate and then perhaps move on to sources such as the website of Snaith Primary School, Humberside, which has a section on the Aztecs (http:home.freeuk.netelloughton13index.htm).

Pupils could look at workers in the Victorian chocolate industry. The Cadbury website provides a fascinating insight into their lives (www.cadburylearningzone.co.uk) and for GCSE this could easily be the subject of a local history study. Older students might debate the geopolitics of chocolate, perhaps comparing its economic significance with that of oil today or sugar in the 18th century.
