Some parallels with past historical events might be explored in tandem with work in geography. The essence of Hillary’s experience is a dramatic story of discovery against all odds, followed by a reaping of the rewards and then regret at the impact of his achievement on local environments and peoples. Pupils at KS3 could use these three stages to compare the stories of explorers such as Magellan, Columbus, Cook. They could examine their discoveries; how they benefited from them and their impact on native peoples.
