FE Focus columnist and outspoken chair of governors David Kissman has been awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Mr Kissman became chair of Broxtowe college in Nottingham in 1992 and helped to steer it out of debt. He said of his award: “I was surprised and delighted. I have enjoyed every minute of being a college governor.”
He was personnel director for high-street chemist Boots when he joined the board at Broxtowe, becoming chair a year later. He also spent three years on the Association of Colleges’ board.
Colonel John Sweeting, chief executive of the Treloar Trust, receives the CBE. The trust runs a school and an FE college in Alton, Hampshire, for young people with physical disabilities.
MBEs have been awarded to Robert French, a volunteer with the Workers Educational Foundation; Judith Swift, national development officer with the Trades Union Congress’ learning services; and Sandra Furby, the manager of Future Prospects in York, for services to adult learning.
