Dr John Rae (above), one of the leading and most controversial figures in British education, died on Saturday. He was 75.
He was headmaster of Westminster School for 20 years and a columnist for The TES. He was also a persistent critic of the public school establishment and wrote a number of books including The Public School Revolution and Delusions of Grandeur: a Headmaster’s Life.
He was convinced that the schools had to become more humane and civilised and was an active member of the Society of Teachers Opposed to Physical Punishment. He leaves behind a widow and six children.
