The sisterhood will have assumed that Edinburgh has struck a blow for the gender revolution, having seen a letter to a national newspaper from “Joy Robson”, the city’s director of education. Alas we have to tell them that Roy Jobson remains in the driving seat.

We hesitate to mention it, but the selfsame paper has an adjoining item offering readers a bottle of champagne for “the best clanger” from the work of pupils and students. Perhaps the first award should forget the poor innocents of the education system and be presented in-house.
