Cade: I think maths is more of a gift than a subject. I love it.

Lily: I think everyone here likes reading. I love reading.

Joshua: It inspires you to read on more.

Cade: I think reading should be banned - I hate it.

Lily: Oh, I really don’t like writing because it can really hurt your wrist sometimes.

Cade: It’s not about the wrist, it’s just so boring.

Joshua: I know.

Lily: I used to like spelling when I was in America, because we used to have a spelling test and you would stand up and say it out loud - that’s better than writing it. But I didn’t spell “strength” right, so I came in sixth place.

Cade: S-T-R-E-N-G-T-H

Lily: Yeah.

Cade: I am in the top group for everything - it’s not fun. Top maths group, top reading group, top everything.

Lily: I am second-top in maths. I kind of like maths. It’s kind of fun.

Cade: I like maths and times tables, because that’s my best subject.

Joshua: I like science - I like things exploding.

Cade: What I don’t understand is we had to make jelly and that was science.

Joshua: I don’t like it when it’s finding out things, I like more making things and exploring. I don’t like subjects when you don’t know and it takes an hour and you have to work on the whole same thing.

Cade: I like maths because you can do it dead fast if you know how, and if you can read fast you can get through the book. I think every single subject is boring apart from maths and reading.

Joshua: What’s boring is just writing all the stuff down. I like to go outside, I like going to the Botanic Gardens to do graphs and stuff like that.

Lily: I don’t like school trips. Sometimes they can be a little bit boring, and they can be freezing. Edinburgh Castle was absolutely freezing. And I think maths can be boring sometimes.

Cade: How can you be saying that?

Lily: I think it’s easier to like something if you are good at it.

Cade: But I’m good at everything, so that makes it much more boring.

Joshua: Maybe your friends can be better at some things, but you can be better at more things. Some of my friends, I am better than them at maths, but they are better than me at writing.

Cade: In spelling, everyone got a word search. The top group and the bottom group both had to do just normal work, and we were watching them like “I hate being in the top group, I want to do a word search.”

Lily: The teacher can make a subject interesting.

Joshua: The teacher makes everything fun.

Lily: Mrs X is so nice.

Cade: All the other teachers are kind of bossy.
