A series of strikes will start on February 24 after lecturers voted in favour of action for more pay.
Natfhe, the lecturers’ union, says its ballot resulted in a 75.9 per cent majority in favour of a one-day strike, which will be followed by further action later in the year.
Barry Lovejoy, the union’s head of colleges, said: “Lecturers voted to strike because they could see no other way forward. When this deal was agreed, college staff were delighted that, at long last, they would catch up with their schoolteacher colleagues. But six months later, far too many colleges are refusing to honour the full deal.”
Sue Dutton, deputy chief executive of the Association of Colleges, said:
“Most of the colleges affected by industrial action are still in pay talks and are in financial difficulty. We ask Natfhe to continue to discuss pay arrangements locally without resorting to this action.”
