Key stage 34: Ask students to classify current blockbusters according to genre, then list them again in order of preference, adding comments to explain the ranking. Students who have mastered the perfect tense could also question each other to compile a survey. What was the last film you saw? Who starred in it? What genre was it? Did you enjoy it? Why? Drawing pen-portraits of favourite stars is another fruitful approach. At KS3 it serves to reinforce core language (age, nationality and so on), at KS4 it can be developed in more depth according to ability. Older students could also extend the conventional "meeting at the cinema" role play to include a debate on the merits of films currently showing.
