THE LIGHT HOUSE. Sand is on the shore Sapphire sea it crashes down On sharp dagger rocks Sand so soft as gold The purple rocks stagger up Through the crashing waves.

JAMES OSBORN BROWN This submission was accompanied by a teacher’s note pointing out that “these are two separate haiku - albeit appearing under one title”. I prefer not to separate them, though. They complement each other, with the sea crashing down in the first and the rocks staggering up in the second. I like the combination of colour, decorative opulence (the sapphire and purple) and elemental force. The title is well-chosen, establishing a perspective and reinforcing the sense of danger. John Mole James Osborn Brown, 8, receives Back by Midnight by John Mole (Puffin).

Submitted by Matthew Heasman of Dollis Junior School, Pursley Road, Mill Hill, London NW7 2BU, who receives a set of Poetry Society posters with teachers’ notes. For Poetry Society events, ring 0171 240 2113.
