Limit set on scripts students can see

MICHEAL Martin, the Irish Education Minister, has modified his plans to give 60,000 students their marked Leaving Certificate scripts next month.

Students will only be able to see the papers for 19 subjects out of the 30 covered by the certificate. The 19 are purely written exams while the remaining 11 have practical, oral or aural components.

The minister was obliged to make the change following complaints from the main secondary teachers’ union which was unhappy about the level of consultation over the original decision.

The union said its members had marked the practicals and orals on the basis of anonymity and this would be breached if the results of the individual components were made available.

Students will have access to their scripts on September 4 and 5.
