Nearly 300 Primary 6 pupils from Renfrewshire schools last week attended a seminar at Park Mains High in Erskine to learn memory techniques and draw mind maps under the guidance of Tony Buzan, who has sold three million books in 30 languages about mind-mapping.

The concept involves illustrated and relational note-taking and subject analysis rather than traditional linear note-taking.

In addition to working with pupils, Mr Buzan explained his techniques to about 330 teachers from primary, secondary, special and pre-five establishments in Renfrewshire as well as educational specialists from the local authority and Reid Kerr College. The seminar on “brain-based learning” in Paisley Town Hall was filmed for use in future training and professional development sessions, which the council hopes will include some staff taking accredited courses to become local trainers in Buzan’s methods.

Education director Shelagh Rae says it’s raising achievement strategy is about using a variety of methods to gain the very best for pupils.
