NASA’s Mars Pathfinder mission in 1997 consisted of a stationary lander and this surface rover, a six-wheeled solar-powered robot (280mm high, 630mm long and 480mm wide), which was controlled by an Earth-based operator. The rover, namd Sojourner - “traveller” - after Sojourner Truth, an African-American abolitionist in the Civil War, sent back thousands of photographs. NASA has announced plans to launch a new Mars rover in 2003.
