With A-level maths in a rather sorry state, it’s a good time to explore a new website that gets students to don their thinking caps. Maths and Engineering in Action has been devised by the Royal Navy, and it places students in positions of responsibility, as if they were making decisions at sea. In working out how to rendezvous with a fuel ship, or send a helicopter to rescue refugees from hostile territory, they have to make calculations involving winds, currents, probabilities and vectors.
