The NASUWT appears to be winning its membership battle with the NUT.
Documents lodged with the Certification Office reveal that the number of “contributing” NASUWT members jumped from 127,365 to 146,266 between December 1992 and 1994. The December 1995 figure, which has yet to be officially declared, was 157,146.
The NUT also seems to be enjoying a revival - the number of contributing members climbed from 176,022 to 189,293 between December 1992 and 1994. But the figures may not be directly comparable with the NASUWT’s (calculating memberships is extremely difficult because students, associate members and retired teachers are included in some totals).
According to TUC records, the NASUWT had 146,266 members last year (which tallies with the Certification Office figure) but the NUT had 175,323 (13, 970 fewer than the Certification Office total). There may be a valid explanation for this discrepancy but unfortunately the NUT, unlike the other unions, refused to speak to The TES about its figures.
