Ed Davey, the Lib Dems’ new education spokesman, has all the right party connections to get to the top. The trouble is, it’s the wrong political party. As an unaffiliated Oxford undergraduate, he considered joining the Labour party, but was so unimpressed by two speakers at a university Labour club meeting that he later joined the Liberals instead. The two speakers? David Miliband and Stephen Twigg, who both went on to become education ministers, where being boring can be a distinct advantage.
