NEARLY a third of of young people will do modern apprenticeships by 2004 if the recommendations of a key advisory body are followed.

The Modern Apprenticeship Advisory Committee says the percentage of those aged 16 to 21 entering apprenticeships should rise from 20 per cent now to 28 per cent by 2004 and 35 per cent by 2010.

Modern Apprenticeships: The Way to Work, published this week, has been welcomed by Estelle Morris, the Education Secretary.

Graduation-style ceremonies should be held to recognise successful apprentices, the report says. It also says every programme should have an agreement setting out the responsibilities of employer and apprentice, and the first eight weeks of programmes should be treated as a probation period.

Ms Morris will consult with the Learning and Skills Council before responding to the proposals.
