The ASA-level syllabus offers plenty of scope for exploring these issues, not only through the topic of immigration, but also religion, politics (could Le Pen happen over here?), the wider world (France’s colonial past, Germany and the end of the Cold War) and education. This last is a hot potato in Germany, still reeling from the shock of coming 21st out of 32 countries in a recent OECD study of 15-year-olds’ key skills. One factor was the large number of children of foreign descent who are handicapped by a poor grasp of German. Britain, by the way, came in the top ten. Good news for once.
