Teachers are being offered subsidised places on a six-month distance-learning course, leading to a Department for Education and Skills certificate in citizenship teaching.

Participants will be supported by a tutor, with two contact days at Birkbeck, University of London. The course includes 44 hours of teaching plus personal study, with teachers expected to write a 5,000- word essay and prepare a portfolio of evidence that they have met the certificate’s standards for citizenship teaching.

The course leaders will be Don Rowe, of the Citizenship Foundation, and Chris Waller, of the Association for Citizenship Teaching.

Teachers with qualified teacher status in primary, secondary and post-16 schools and colleges can apply for a subsidised place, costing pound;100.
