A MUSIC comprehensive opening in August at St Ambrose High in Coatbridge is the latest approach in North Lanarkshire to developing the whole person, Michael O’Neill, education director in the country’s top-rated authority, told the conference.

The school will follow the model of the three sports comprehensives at St Margaret’s High, Airdrie, St Maurice’s High, Cumbernauld, and Braidhurst High, Motherwell, and offer extra musical opportunities to Coatbridge pupils.

Mr O’Neill said North Lanarkshire already has a vibrant out-of-hours programme for music and all schools promoted additional activities as part of the wider raising achievement agenda.

All secondaries are involved in Easter study schools and Outward Bound courses. In five years, some 5,000 young people had been through the week-long outdoor adventure courses held at Loch Eil, near Fort William.
